Let your students have some writing fun while learning the importance of details in writing.
In this 13-page printable activity, students use three famous paintings and learn the importance in writing of noting precise details.
The first two paintings are WASHINGTON CROSSING THE DELAWARE and MONA LISA. Put these on your screen (they are included in the pdf), and ask the accompanying series of questions about them. You also have the answers to the questions.
All these questions help students zero in on specific details of the paintings.
Then tell students you are going to put up a third painting, one perhaps more often reproduced than the others. They will chuckle when you put up the DOGS PLAYING POKER painting. In the next part of the activity, students will again note details but this time they will be on their own.
Give them 5-10 minutes to list all the details they can about the painting. You have (3 pages of questions and answers), and you can play a game to see which details students noted.
Also included is a 2-page biography of the interesting life of Cassius Coolidge, the artist behind DOGS PLAYING POKER, along with additional trivia and Internet sites for further study.
