This Powerpoint lesson encourages students to develop their creative writing skills and utilize examples of figurative language in their writing.
I have used this lesson with students from grades 6-11 and have found it to be a worthwhile activity to help students further express their creative writing skills. It also doesn't hurt that they get a candy as part of the process.
The language used in this presentation also corresponds with the 6+1 Traits of Writing developed and promoted by Ruth Culham.
The actual PowerPoint presentation will take the students roughly 30 minutes or so to complete. I encourage students to share their work with their peers and the class as we work through the presentation. The writing process for the assignment can take students roughly 30-40 minutes in addition to this. As an added bonus you can then have students peer-review their papers before submitting them.
I generally use this as a formative assessment piece. A rubric for assessment is not included.
The preview slides are created using a different theme on PowerPoint and are not reflective of the original presentation.
