This 1-page handout provides an explanation and varied approaches to writing both literal and figurative description of characters, either in personal narrative or fiction. These particular examples each refer to a photo I found of Tweak author Nic Sheff; a similar photo of Sheff can be viewed at http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/artwork/8/4/3/4/1/84341/Nic_Sheff_Photo-prv.jpg. This is an ideal introduction to any writing unit regarding characterization, description, or fiction, and it can easily segue into a writing activity where students attempt both literal and figurative descriptions of portraits clipped from newspapers and magazines. Also check out my other materials for grammar and mechanics, literary units, and writing instruction. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance either before or after purchasing a product; I'll be happy to help where I can.
