This is a weeklong collection of lesson plans and creative activities to teach the process of dynamic descriptive writing. Students will brainstorm adjectives and phrases to describe a character they are going to create. By using their five senses, students will use a Write, Create, Write
method to develop a robust descriptive paragraph to elevate their narrative writing.
When given writing prompts, students with limited experiences and limited vocabulary often flounder. The magic of Write, Create, Write is that students at any level first observe what other quality writers have written, create a new experience, and then apply their writing skills to express themselves.
This process can be applied to any genre, topic, or grade level.
We’ve chosen to pair the writing process with creating paper bag puppets. We’ve included puppet templates that can be used to create fictional characters, historical figures, old friends from fairy tales, and even animals. You can assist students in the artistic aspects of creation as much as necessary.
After purchasing, I would read the Lesson Plan pages completely before doing anything else. It will show you how all the documents in this resource fit together and when they’re used. Think through the logistics of the Paragraph & Puppet Match and adapt the plan to suit your space and your students.
The examples in this resource revolve around Christmas and seasonal characters, as that was the time of year when it was first created. Think about how you could use descriptive writing at other times of the year.
