INTERACTIVE LESSON WITH BUILT-IN ASSESSMENT. This Slides presentation can be used to teach a mini-lesson on descriptive and sensory writing for personal narratives and other creative writing projects. It begins with a whole class activity in which each student will describe their room or favorite place in five minutes of speed writing and then trade with another student who will attempt to draw the room they have described in six minutes. This allows students to test their descriptive writing skills, and if you collect this paragraph, you can compare their descriptive writing at the beginning and the end of the lesson. Students will then compare showing and telling sentences and turn telling sentences into specific, showing sentences as a class and alone or with a partner. Then, students will participate in a think-pair-share about the use of sensory details in the prologue of The Night Circus (can be downloaded for free in The Night Circus preview on the Kindle App). Students will then participate in the built-in assessment and write a descriptive paragraph using sensory details about a basketball game or a day at the beach. The presentation ends with a warning about and an example of too much description.
