Get students into writing with these 12 original photographs of the desert habitat scenes in Mexico. Print out color or black and white prints from masters, or just display a photo digitally and get students to write from color prompt. They can also make a beautiful bulletin board of student work when completed. Glue on black construction paper for a crisp matted look for displayed work. Use picture prompts with poetry objectives, short narrative objectives, main idea, informational text, etc. I also like to copy about six pages of each master and then allow students to choose which prompt page they would like to glue into their writing journal. You could also have all students write from same prompt and hand out writing paper to be stapled to story starter page. Great writers need 20 minutes of actual writing time each day to make notable writing gains. Explicit mini lessons will keep them moving forward with their voice and conventions.
