I made this activity to extend the learning my class will do after reading an article in Guided Reading about Planning A Garden. However, this could be used all by itself to merge Reading and Math into Project-Based Learning. It could even be a STEM activity!
It might even be fun to experiment with hostas as class plants!
Students start by looking at pictures of hosta gardens to get ideas. Then they receive pictures of items in a garden, hostas, and sample garden designs, a budget sheet, and a real online hosta supplier source for pricing. They use all of these things to help them create and budget a garden.
Once their budgets are done, they can use the pictures to draw their gardens. I suggest they use centimeter graph paper, as finding 10 square foot areas is involved!
I hope you and your kiddos have a good time learning, solving, and drawing!
