Whatever happened to the days of dropping quarters in arcade games for hours? The arcade has slowly been disappearing over the years, but once they were magnets for kids and adults of all ages. Video games changed and knocked out the arcades, but what if we brought them back? What if we let students redesign and rethink the arcade? What is we asked students to created their own version of an arcade?
Design An Arcade
does this. It asks students to design their perfect arcade. This project integrates elements of planning, design, and organization with cross curricular activities for students to develop and design their own arcade. At the end of this PBL students will have completely developed unique and personalized place too.
There are 20 activities (most are 1 page each) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research. As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.
6 Title Page and Introduction
8 Arcade Brainstorm
Students brainstorm what they know about arcades.
9 Arcade History
Students answer questions related to the history of arcades and how they have changed over the year.
10 Make It Official
Students create a name, logo, and slogan for the arcade.
Students design a billboard for a marketing campaign to bring in customers.
12 Supply Budget This is a 4-part budgeting plan. Students must choose supplies, equipment, and other necessities, but are on a budget. They will then break the data down into categories and graph it. Once that is complete students will discuss why they made certain decisions for their arcade.
16 Arcade Invention
Students must invent a brand new arcade game.
17 Redemption Center Students must create a list of prizes that will be in the redemption center for each amount of tickets the customers win.
18 The Games
Students must pick four games they would like to have in their arcade. They will design the front of each game. These can be new or pre-existing games.
20 Art Design
Students will design the outside of two classic arcade games, putting details across all visible sections of the game box.
21 App Design
Students will take “screenshots” of an app for the arcade. They will have to design what they want the app to include, there is a list of choices to pick from (to assist).
22 Marketing Strategy
Students must come up with five reasons why people should come to the arcade and write them out.
23 Concession Stand
Students create a menu for the concession stand and then create word problems using the menu and prices.
26 Job Positions
Students must pick classmates to fill the many job positions within the arcade.
27 Arcade Map and Key Design
Students must design a map and map key of the arcade that includes all the items, games, and anything else that they have included in their arcade. The map can be completed over multiple pages and does not have to fit on a single page.
32 Problem Solver
Students will need to have solutions for issues that could arise at the arcade. They will have to problem solve and think about how they would respond to situations (appropriately). There are six problems for them to solve and require extended answers.
All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions. Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.
