In this NGSS aligned design challenge, students are tasked with designing and building a cold pack for the school nurse.
This project is designed for middle school physical science students. Students should have some background knowledge on chemical energy and endothermic and exothermic reactions. The assignment is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards, including MS-PS1-6 and MS-ETS1-1.

Materials for Each Student
Materials for Each Group (these should be available, but student groups will only be using a selection of all the materials available)
-about 10 ml of vinegar in a small plastic cup
-about 1 tbsp of baking soda in a small cup
-about 10 ml of baking soda solution in a small cup (Prepare by dissolving about 2 tbsp of baking soda in 1 cup of water. Stir until no more baking soda will dissolve.)
-about 1 tbsp of calcium chloride in a small cup
-1 set of measuring spoons
-1 quart size zip-closing plastic bag
-1 snack size zip-closing plastic bag
-1 timer (optional)
