I taught an Occupational Course of Study class this year and developed this project for them to learn and/or review area and perimeter while also introducing them to scale factors, angles, geometric design, and even the skills necessary to create a sales document on the computer. Please see the preview to see all that's included in the project.
Even though I designed this to be a hands-on project for high school kids on a third to fifth grade level, this could easily be incorporated for middle or high school depending on the level of your students, mainly because calculating area and perimeter of shapes other than rectangles can be challenging even for teachers. And as much as my "regular" Math 1 students enjoyed the Fermi Project (it's in my store,) they all wanted to do the Dream House project because it is VERY hands-on. I would not hesitate, and am planning on, using this for ninth grade Math 1 students in the future. Hope your students enjoy it!!
