This is a great beginning of the year lesson when students are just getting settled into the routine of the classroom. My students’ loved coloring in coloring pages, which I would routinely print out for them. There are so many different themes available that are interesting to students of all ages. (Superheroes, video games, music, etc.) Before beginning this project, you could give them samples to color in so they can see what makes a coloring page interesting or challenging. When working on this project, I recommend pushing students to really make their drawings “advanced”. Using thick sharpies for bold images and thin sharpies for fine details helps them to make their work more complex. I’ve incorporated my students’ work into the lesson, but when I presented it to them, I used images I found on the internet. For early finishers, you might want to have them design a cover for the coloring book. The students in the class can vote on their favorite. When I did the cover design contest in my class, I gave guidelines such as the school’s name, class/period, students’ names, and year.
I hope this project is as successful in your classroom as it was in mine!
*I have included a presentation, a project guideline handout, and a self assessment into this resource.
