In Design Your Own Experiment: Fortune Fish, students design and conduct their own experiment to test why the Fortune Fish moves when it is in their hand. This lab is a good beginning of the year activity, but it can really be done at any time. I use it with a unit on scientific inquiry to get my students more comfortable with the scientific method. This lab is a .docx, and you are welcome to modify to fit the needs of your students!

I really like the idea of having students design and conduct their own labs, but unfortunately, they are often not prepared to work that independently. This Fortune Fish Lab works well because it offers students guidance and structure while they are technically designing their own experiment.

The only necessary material for this lab is Fortune Fish, which can be purchased online through a variety of retailers.

*Note: Fortune Fish “predict” the following fortunes:

moving head- jealousy
moving tail- indifference
moving head and tail- in love
curling sides- fickle
turns over- false
motionless- dead one
curls up entirely- passionate

Please use your own discretion to determine if these fortunes are suitable for your students.
