Students learn the basic stages of designing a house, from planning to final design, in this two week unit. Critical thinking plays a large role in this activity. The unit has a strong emphasis on the preliminary planning stages of designing a home: spaces that are necessary vs. those that are amenities; defining public vs. private spaces; room locations and relationships; and working within a square footage budget. Just as an architect does, students will develop a preliminary floor plan, refine it, and produce a final design. Math skills are utilized in determining the area of rooms, with extension ideas such as calculating the cost to build their home or applying an architectural style to the home.
