Students are asked to design a back yard using various items described in the lesson. Students are to use a ruler and calculate the area and perimeter of each item placed in the backyard while also calcualting the percentage of the backyard that the object takes up. Can be done individually or in groups. A fun and great way to help students see the importance and relevance of learning perimeter, area and percents. My students LOVE this activity! I have used it in my 6th and 7th grade classes as well as my remediation math class for grades 6-8! For a greater challenge, ask students to also determine the depth of each item and have them calculate the volume in addition to the area and perimeter!
