This is a bundle of all 4 plans for Design a Device. In these plans, students will learn the design process - Ask, Imagine, Plan & Create, and Improve.
Week 1 - ASK - Students will learn about the engineering design process at an overview level. They will then spend the rest of the week learning in depth about the “ask” portion. This includes being able to define a problem, create a scientific question, determine constraints and discover how others have attempted to solve the problem. The challenge for the unit will be to design a device or tool that can be used without humans in an candy factory to make sure the bags weigh the amount they are supposed to.
Week 2 - IMAGINE - Students will learn how the “Imagine” stage of the Engineering Design Process works. This is the second week in a four-week unit. Students will learn about how to effectively collaborate in a team, multiple methods of ideation and how to refine a list of brainstormed ideas in a group and arrive at a specific solution.
Week 3 - PLAN & CREATE - In this third week of a four-week unit, students will take the ideas generated in the previous week and refine them down to a single solution. Teams will learn about sampling methodologies and work to test their solution.
Week 4 - IMPROVE - This is the final week of a four-week unit. Teams will use the data that was collected in the prior week to analyze and report. They will identify areas for improvement, enact those improvements, retest and report on the results.
