PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Have your students use their creative, critical and historical thinking skills to demonstrate what they have learned about life in Early Canada as people migrated west and settled on the prairies. Students are invited to register for a homestead. They will need to present a map of the location, a visual representation of what the homestead is expected to look like and a written letter outlining how their family will benefit from the move. They will describe nearby towns, access to water, how and what they will build, potential animals or crops that can be raised and explain the chores and responsibilities for the family. Students need to have a basic understanding of the basic geographic knowledge of prairies in order to be successful and having an understanding of the basic homestead rules and how life was will help. This is a very open-ended task, with a clear rubric outlining the content which is expected to be addressed. A checklist is also included for students. For about 30 minutes of teaching time up front (not including imparting the basic knowledge upon students), students are kept engaged in their learning for 2-3 weeks of social studies classes. Student samples of the tasks are included with a detailed rubric.

This activity has been tested with three different groups of grade four students and is a HUGE hit. Students have made homesteads that included diagrams, Lego®, Minecraft®, cardboard and even one made of sticks and moss.

This task aligns with the Alberta Program of Studies for Grade 4 Social Studies, but is broad enough to be used with any lesson covering early settlements in the west.

Does your classroom implement Universal Design for Learning? This activity is perfect for your "multiple means of expression" principle.
