Product Description
School administrators want to create a STEM Lab in school. They are looking to create a learning space where students can come create, design, invent, and explore with STEM. The STEM Lab is a place where students will come to create, collaborate, and solve problems so it must be created with kids at the forefront.--BUT they want the students to design it.

Design a STEM Lab is a multi-tiered project based learning activity that can be tailored to fit your classroom. The objective of this project is for students to design and build a STEM LAB for their school. In doing so, students will work within a budget while designing the layout and creating a functional new learning space for their school. This PBL activity focuses on combining real-world elements with cross curricular elements and critical problem solving and collaborating skills. It allows for differentiation both academically and based on student perspective and personal knowledge/situations.

Areas of focus in this resource are:
-Planning & Budgeting: Addition and Subtraction into the thousands with multi-digit numbers.
-Adding and subtracting decimals (into the hundredths).
-Building: Geometry, Area and Perimeter

With this resource students WILL CREATE a miniature version of a STEM LAB. The size of the STEM LABS will all be the same, but each student (or group) will create a unique version based on their own ideas, imagination, and application of skills. The STEM Lab can be created in two-dimensional form or three dimensional form. The budgeting portion is individualized and teachers have multiple choices to pick from.

---------

There a TWO versions of this resource!
Two Dimensional: The two dimensional version has students creating a STEM Lab only using a base floor plan.

First: Directions
Read ALL the directions in Design A STEM Lab.
VERY IMPORTANT! >>>> Refer back to them as much as you need.

Second: STEM THOUGHTS
Answer and discuss questions about how and why STEM is important in school, in jobs, and around the world.

Third: The Parts
Learn your objectives and understand the key parts of this project based learning activity.

Fourth: Materials List
Pick 15 materials you will use/need in your STEM Lab.

Fifth: Rough Draft
Create a rough draft of your STEM Lab and include all materials from your list.

Sixth: Final Version
Create a final version of the STEM Lab. There are 4 pages for the Base and Walls. Include each item from the requirement list.

Seventh: Share It out
Share your creation and present it to classmates or teachers.

Eighth: Reflection
Answer questions about the stem lab design and reflect on your creation.

Three Dimensional Version
Three Dimensional: The three dimensional version has students creating a STEM Lab that includes floors and walls that will be placed together and stand up. It also includes a front wall, which is optional to create. It does not include a ceiling portion.

Learn your objective and the parts of this project based learning activity.

Fourth: Materials List
Pick the materials you will be using in your STEM Lab.

Fifth: Rough Draft
Create a rough draft of your STEM Lab and include all items on the requirements list.

Sixth: Final Version
Create a final version of the STEM Lab. There are 4 pages for the Base and Walls. Include each item from the requirement list.

Seventh: Build the Lab
Cut out each of the four sections of the lab and fit them together.

Eighth: Building Materials
OPTIONAL: Create 3D nets of the furnishings in your lab.
There is a page included or you may use graph paper included.

Ninth: Share It out
Share your creation and present it to classmates or teachers.

Tenth: Reflection
Answer questions about the lab design and reflect on your creation.

Also included are two budgeting tasks:
TASK ONE:
Students use the Materials List with prices and find the total cost of their STEM Lab, categorize materials bought, find totals, and answer questions related to budgeting choices.

TASK TWO:
Students are given a budget and they must pick materials for their lab. There are three different money amounts to choose from ($2,500, $3,500, and $4,500).

This resource is HIGHLY INTERCHANGABLE. Teachers can choose 2D or 3D versions, pick budgeting level (or no budget at all), and vary how much each student works on.

---------

Measurement Units
The measurement used for this project will be a units per cube.
You may choose to increase complexity by making each cube worth more. Use this with students to easily differentiate.

-There are 9 additional sheets for the 2D versions where each cube is 2-10 units in length and width.

There are NO customary or metric measurements.

Materials Needed:
-computer paper
-card stock (optional for the
house building)
-crayons and colored pencils
-scissors
-tape and glue

Time:
The time frame for completing this project will vary greatly. If you are planning to complete it in a week, give 45-60 minutes per day or longer. All students will work at different rates, but by the end of the week students should be finishing the required steps (1-8/10) or trying some of the additional tasks.

-Time can vary based on many factors.

--This PBL focuses on pushing students to explore, create, design, and research a decade while applying problem solving techniques and collaborating with others. It allows for easy differentiation, so students can work at a pace they will be successful at. There are steps and procedures to assist students through this project, but the work and results will be determined by their ideas that each students adds.
