Get kids THINKING! NO SUPPLIES NEEDED! Reviews both NGSS Earth Science MS-ESS2-1 and MS-ESS2-2, well as supporting the NGSS "Developing and Using Models" practice.
In this activity, students are challenged to design a model of Earth that represents Earth's layers, plate tectonics, and related landforms. Groups work together to figure how each of these items could be represented in a scientific model. Because they are only designing the model and not building it, the possible materials to use are only limited by their imagination! Groups will discuss the best types of materials to use, how they would physically represent each feature, and how the model would be constructed. This activity really gets kids THINKING!
While this sounds a bit challenging for middle school students, this resource makes it very straightforward. This worksheet leads students step-by-step through the process of designing their model. It guides them to think about each section individually, so the process is not as overwhelming as it may sound. The steps are easy to follow and clear. Students simply follow the steps one after the other in order to design their model.
Because the range of students' imagination is so huge, this document does not contain an answer key.
