Use this activity after teaching about the six simple machines. This would be great to do after the end of your unit, before state testing as a review, or at the end of the school year.
Start by showing video clips from sciencechannel.com of roller coasters. Discuss the simple machines used to build and operate a roller coaster. Encourage students to share their thoughts about the design of roller coasters.
Next show them a map of a local theme park. You can find these by searching the internet. We used Six Flags Over Georgia as our model.
Present students with their challenge by giving them the instructions page. Encourage creativity and original thinking. This is a super fun activity for them!
