Performance assessment tasks are vital evaluation tools, but these assessments do
take a significant amount of time to develop. Because of the time commitment,
teachers tend not to use performance assessment tasks in their classrooms.
To streamline the design process for teachers, I created a four step approach based
on Backward Design, the ADDIE model, and Wiggles’ and Grant Understands by
The design process takes approximately 1-2 hours depending on a
teacher’s content knowledge level and curriculum design capabilities.
I also included classroom implementation strategies. Generally, teachers will design
a performance assessment task but will never implement their design; because,
they are not sure how to introduce this type of assessment to their students.
I hope these classroom implementation strategies will help educators gradually
introduce performance assessment tasks back into their classrooms.
