This project allows students to demonstrate their understanding of volume and surface area of three dimensional figures. It gives students the opportunity to directly apply their knowledge and understanding of geometrical objects in a real world situation.
Students will put themselves in the shoes of engineers at Aquatank, an imaginary aquarium company. Students will receive the request of customers to design tanks with specified volume and unique characteristics that meet their needs and wants. The students' job will be to design such a tank, considering the geometrical object and surface area that will suit their customer’s desires. They will then explain their design to their "customer" (by presenting their work), and explain why they think this tank design will be fit for them. Students will also create a physical model of their aquarium design and present it to the class.
This is a performance task that can be done at the end of a geometry unit on two and three-dimensional figures.
