This adaptation of Kate Chopin's "Desiree's Baby" is written at a 3rd grade reading level, but still maintains the biting social criticism and complex themes of the original story. This story is ideal for struggling and/or reluctant readers at the high school level or above.
This story is part of a series of adaptations of works of literature and of historical importance from the public domain. They have been adapted for struggling readers, ELL students, and students in lower grades. My goal for these adaptations is to introduce mature and historically significant content to students who may still be developing the skills necessary to read the text in its original form.
