My favorite way to use this is to give to students before writing and go over it as a class. They keep this in their binder to refer back to when they are writing drafts. Once they have published their final draft, they use the rubric to grade themselves. They turn in the final draft with the self-graded rubric. I use a highlighter to grade them on the same rubric, so that it is clear the differences between their self-grading and my grading. This helps them be honest and reflective.
Each category has descriptions, in kid friendly language, of how to earn that grade.
