Do you want to help your students write more detailed sentences? This writing resource encourages students to write complete sentences and detailed sentences using photographs of animals! Use the organizers provided to help your students write detailed sentences about the photos. Student will practice using different adjectives, verbs, and nouns to describe each picture. They may also learn about an animal they have never heard of before and learn some new vocabulary words from their peers. This resource can be easily differentiated to meet the needs of all students.

There are 95 pages with graphic organizers, photos, and lines for students to work on their detailed sentences. I have provided 9 example pages on how to fill out the organizers and write detailed sentences using the organizers. There is one example page provided for each of the 9 topics in this resource.

The topics included are:

  • African safari animals
  • Forest animals
  • Desert animals
  • Rainforest animals
  • Australian animals
  • Arctic animals
  • Ocean animals
  • Farm animals
  • Pets

There is a list of which animals are included in each topic as well.

There is also a blank page provided in which you can add your own photo or have students draw a picture to go along with a theme you are teaching.

The photos are on each page to make describing it very accessible for the students. I have also provided a PowerPoint presentation with the larger color photos, so you can project the photos for the students to see and talk about. This is especially helpful if you are like me and do not have a color printer/copier at your school.

I start using these pages whole-group and focus on describing the photos orally. Work towards independence. My students were able to use these to write detailed sentences during their writing center in the middle of the year (1st grade). This can also be used as morning work or an option for early finishers. My students are always excited to see which photo they get for the day-kids just love animals!
