A Quick Description

Help your students become detectives in your classroom! Students complete 10 NBT review challenges that are real-world detective-themed math problems. This math activity is perfect for first graders. It aligns with 1.NBT.1, 1.NBT.2, 1.NBT.3, 1.NBT.4, 1.NBT.5, and 1.NBT.6.

Print out all 11 high school student "suspect" posters and all 10 aligned sleuth challenges. Distribute them around your room. Give each child the 2 recording sheets they need to figure out who the thief is! Explain to students that they will become detectives and will need to complete all ten challenges! They have to find all ten challenges you've left around the classroom and figure out the math mistake each high school student made while completing their assignment. They use the recording sheet to mark off each challenge as they go.

How to Play

Step 1: Tell your class there is a thief that has stolen something special in your classroom. They have to solve ten math challenges to figure out who the culprit is.

Set-up is quick and easy. Simply print the 10 posters, the math worksheets, and a recording sheet for each student. Place them around your room and you’re ready to begin! Additional door décor, editable name tags, editable admission tickets, and themed banner are included if you want to use them!

Step 2: Students solve math challenges set up around the room. They can be completed in any order and in whatever time frame you’d like. Students do need to solve all 10 challenges to solve the mystery. They can work independently, in partners, or groups. Your choice!

Step 3: Students solve a math challenge. They get it checked by the teacher. Then they get to go get a clue that will give them a hint about a suspect to cross off their recording sheet.

Step 4: When students finish all ten challenges (or however many you assign), the culprit is revealed! You can give them the certificate of completion included.
