This graphic organizer can be used as a pre or formative assessment of vocabulary words in both literary and informational texts. Begin with a Tier 2 or Tier 3 vocabulary word important to your content. Provide a text that relates to the vocabulary word you've chosen. Students will read the text, noting words, phrases, and/or sentences that describe the vocabulary word. They then describe why they chose the text evidence they did. Students then create a definition of the word using the information gained from the text and text-evidence. By analyzing the assessment, it will be clear whether or not students understand the meaning of the word or if more instruction is needed.
