So you've taught your kiddos about determining importance, but how can they practice this skill? You've probably noticed on my TpT site that I make mini-charts like this for just about all literacy-related learning we do. Kids in our room know that writing about our thinking is just part of what we do every single day. Prior to a mini-lesson on determining importance, I cut down this chart for students to glue onto a blank page of their Thoughtful Logs (reading journals). The chart is a perfect scaffold to help students write about their thinking (metacognition!) and expand on what they are learning. This particular chart requires students to determine and defend (in writing) what would be important to take on a camping trip. To see more 'action shots' of how I use this chart in my classroom, visit my classroom blog: http://lifein4b.blogspot.com/2012/03/digging-through-miss-bongers-purse.html
