Now that students have learned the basic equation that starts kinematics, it’s time to start getting better results that don’t rely on human reaction time! I use this lab to introduce the use of photogates. The lab in itself is actually quite simple and does not require much time. My students are able to complete this entire lab in one class period. I enjoy the fact that the lab again reinforces the equation they just learned in the last lab AND reinforces conversions. I use part two of the lab to not only reinforce the difference between average speeds and instantaneous speeds, but also to introduce acceleration. Since the next topic in class is acceleration, why not use this lab as a tool to bridge constant speed motion and accelerated motion together?
