The goal of this resource is to help your students understand the concept of theme and provide them with multiple opportunities to practice, and eventually master, this concept. With this resource, your students will read a short story, think beyond the specific details and elements of the story, and pull out the main theme or message of the story.
This resource includes everything you will need to practice determining theme with your students! I’ve included THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF EACH PASSAGE for you to easily differentiate in your classroom! There are also short-answer questions for your students to practice determining theme.

This resource contains ten differentiated fiction passages. There are three levels of each passage so you can easily differentiate with your students. The levels are based on word count and Lexile levels, which can be found in the top left corner of each passage. The passages were written with the specific goal of helping students identify theme.

Four Short-Answer Questions Per Passage
Each passage includes four short-answer questions that ask students to determine the theme of a story. In addition, students have to identify the facts and details to support their answer, analyze how the conflict or details of the text contribute to the theme, and synthesize by applying the theme to different situations.

Answer keys with detailed example responses are provided with every set of questions.
