Determining theme and its development is central to Common Core literature skills. This FREE activity enables students to employ a variety of strategies to identify themes and how they develop over the course of a text. It also adds a modern twist by allowing students to connect these themes to their favorite music.
Used with ANY short story or novel, this lesson is aligned to the following Common Core State Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.
