Determining Theme is not simply a one word answer - students need to be able to use those big ideas, connect them to a character's action from the text, analyze how that character reacts and changes due to circumstances, and then determine what the author wants the reader to apply to their own lives. End with an "I" statement for the BIG Message.
I copy this organizer double-sided so I model finding the theme from one text, and then students find the theme on another passage.
