This lesson is designed to introduce both claim and counter-claim to high school students. It uses segments of JFK's 2nd Inaugural Address. It focuses on both identifying Kennedy's claims and drafting original analytical claims.
The lesson is highly scaffolded with extensive teaching suggestions included. It takes multiple days to complete and is designed to balance independent, whole group, and small group tasks.
In my class, we read the speech in its entirety prior to working this lesson. I've also included a culminating writing task, which you may or may not choose to use.
I used this with on-level 11th grade students and advanced 10th grade students, and it was successful in both situations. It is designed for CCSS, but works with any rigorous set of standards.
