Students often struggle with building Redox half-equations from written descriptions in worded problems, as well as knowing how to recognise the respective oxidation and reduction half equations when provided with a balanced chemical equation. I have developed, and tested in my senior Chemistry classes, a card format that can be printed, laminated and supplied to my students for use in class. The step-wise approach provided enables them to build-up up their half equations and then readily recognise which reaction is oxidation and which is reduction. A second card is supplied as a worked example that provides further scaffolding in worded question scenarios. My students find that this structured approach improves their confidence in both writing and recognition of Redox half, and full, equations. A laminated card is durable for in-class use, as well as being able to be posted on a wall during revision time for exams.
