This post-reading discussion activity guides students through the process of developing theme statements based on motifs and symbols in a literary work. Through text-based analysis, students will explore the deeper meaning of a literary work. Though the activity is optimized for "silent" discussion, instructions are included for modifying the activity into a lively small group discussion. In either case, the activity culminates in a class discussion of themes in the literary work. The download includes not only the activity handouts, but also detailed instructions that feature tips and tricks I've learned along the way in guiding this discussion myself. This activity can also be extended to an in-class essay if desired. It is formatted for use with any literary work and works best when students have been maintaining some type of reading log or double-entry journal.
