This assignment is for when students have finished the novel and need to look at how the themes were developed. It provides three themes for them to work with. (1. Friendship can save you, and loneliness can corrupt you. 2.The world (human existence) has a predatory nature and destroys things. 3.The American Dream is broken/impossible/an illusion.)
Students are given 48 images from the Farm Security Collection at the Library of Congress to use to suggest ideas, characters, and or events in the story that help develop the theme. They choose 8 images and, in 1-2 sentences, explain how the image relates to the novel and the theme and create theme posters.
This primarily relates to CC ELA Standard for Reading Literature 2 for 11-12.
Assessment is based on their successful support of the multiple themes.
