In this activity students will examine the UN Human Development Index to first learn how the UN measures human development. Next, students will learn which countries have high human development and which countries are at the bottom of the index.
Next, students will go to the CIA World Factbook to learn more about the economies of high and low development countries. They will begin to see commonalities between the countries at the bottom and those at the top.
Finally, they will draw conclusions about the characteristics helped by less developed countries as a means to begin exploring the development economics unit.
Teacher answer key is included.
This is an excellent resource for your students who are beginning a unit on economic development in IB Economics or World Issues.
