This is the first of two power points I use in my unit 5 on Eastern Absolutism. This follows my unit 4 on Constitutionalism and Absolutism. This power point is 80 slides covering Prussia and Austria after the 30 Years' War. The first half of the power point is devoted to characteristics of Eastern Absolutism and how it compared to Western Absolutism of France. Students are given the essay question on this topic that they are to answer. A graphic organizer is provided and as the students progress through the slides, they should be able to add information to the graphic organizer. Analysis is the key after the graphic organizer is completed and the thesis should be attempted.
Part 2 is on the rise of absolutism in Prussia. The actions of Frederick William, the Great Elector and his grandson King Frederick William I are given as well as the graphic organizer to be completed. Teachers will find the completed organizer at the end of the power point. The key again is for the students to make sense of the information and analyze how and why absolutism developed in Prussia.
Concluding discuss should be on the reasons for the difference with French absolutism and Louis XIV.
