Students trace the evolution of important events and principles in English government throughout the Middle Ages in this resource. The lesson presents analysis questions using primary source excerpts, images, maps, charts, and summary readings. A thorough 3 page teacher guide and answer key is included.
The lesson starts with a "Do Now" question that helps students link what they know about present day England to its development during the Middle Ages.
Students begin by examining a family tree, read a notes section, and watch a 2 minute fun video (optional) to learn about William the Conqueror and determine whether he really had the best claim on the English throne. They then inspect a map of the Battle of Hastings and watch another fun optional 2 minute video to determine why the Normans won. They learn about the famous Bayeux Tapestry, the Domesday Book, and use a map to determine how William strengthened his monarchy.
Students then read about King Henry II's development of English "common law" and analyze how this system benefitted both monarch and subjects. They examine a primary source excerpt to learn about the birth of the jury system in England. Students go on to read about "Bad" King John and examine selected articles from the Magna Carta to determine the purpose and significance of this document. (See here
for a lesson with further detail on this topic, including a fun game.) Finally, students learn about King Edward I's creation of Parliament and analyze its right to have "power of the purse."
The lesson finishes with a summative writing activity in which students describe the evolution of government in England during the Middle Ages and evaluate the impact of specific kings' actions.
This lesson covers all the key points students must know about this subject for state assessments, and is completely Common Core aligned.
