This popular story by Stephen Vincent Benet is a great addition to any unit on Tall Tales. I have created a PPT to give students the background framework of the story, along with some historical information on the members of the jury at the trial of Jabez Stone. Included are 36 questions that cover exaggeration, plot, characters, conflict and symbolism, along with an answer key. Additionally, a prompt for incorporating writing asks students to take a stance on whether or not they agree with the verdict for Stone. This prompt can be easily adapted for point of view or persuasive writing modes. For a closing activity, I have designed a coloring sheet that illustrates the fate of Jabez and Scratch's other victims.
