Devil in the White City – Common Core Curriculum Standards
Everything needed to have a student-led group project, a Literature Circle, over Devil in the White City is included in this lesson. The unit will require 22 days for students to read the text within their literature circle, with an additional 5 days for reading quizzes.
Instructions for the teacher are included. A daily position sheet is included for assigning each member of the group to complete the written activities they are required to do during the 22 days of assigned readings. These activities include written directions for the different “positions” that each student in the group must complete before the next day’s reading begins. Directions for putting together a separate folder for each reading group and grading of the groups are included.
Monitoring is required for the first few days and random “checking” to be sure that students are on task is advised. This activity requires students to be active readers and participators in a student-led reading project. After discussion of the previous day’s lesson from the position sheets each student has prepared before class, they proceed in their group to read the next assigned section of the text aloud within the group.
The activity also addresses the reading, writing, language, and speaking and listening standards of the Common Core Curriculum. This activity is a good culminating project that demonstrates the students’ ability to decode and respond to a reading text independently. The common core curriculum standards are included with this unit and an explanation of which standards are addressed by the unit.

Common Core Curriculum Standards
Reading Standards – Literature: This Literature Circle activity addresses all of the Reading Literature Standards (RL1-10) which are Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas and Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity . It is especially useful to prove the RL10 Standard which reads: “By the end of grade 12, read and comprehend literature . . . at the high end of the grades 11-CCR text complexity band independently and proficiently.
Writing Standards: This activity addresses the Writing Standards W1-W2F as students respond to the quiz questions and provide responses on their position papers provided in the unit.
Language Standards: This activity addresses the Language Standards L1-L6 as students read independently and write essay response questions
Speaking and Listening Standards: This activity addresses the standards in Comprehension and Collaboration SL1a-d as students work collaboratively in assigned reading groups. The additional standard of SL4 of Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas is also incorporated into this activity.
