Huge Elementary Library Product Bundle!

This activity was adapted from an article from a school library journal that was published several years ago. It’s a fun way for students to learn more about what’s in the nonfiction part of your library. Perfect for the Halloween season!

NOTE: The thumbnail image above is just a PORTION of the worksheet. The worksheet in its entirety will be downloaded after purchase.

Included is a worksheet/scavenger hunt that has 13 Dewey nonfiction call numbers. Students then browse your nonfiction shelves to locate those numbers on the spine labels of books and then draw what the subject is on the worksheet. You may have the students work alone, in pairs or in groups depending on their ability. I reward them with some smarties or candy corn when they finish. My students really enjoy completing this activity!

As another option to complete the activity, students may search the online catalog for the call numbers. For example, we use Destiny and when you are in the catalog, you can click on the “number” tab and type in the call number to see a list of books with that matching call number. Students look at the list of books and decide what the main subject is and then draw that subject on their worksheet.

Although I am an elementary media specialist and use this for my upper elementary students, I think this would be fun for middle school students as well!

I’ve also included an answer key for you to use.

I used the Dewey call numbers that I have in my library. I understand that these call numbers might be a little different for you. If you need me to change some of the call numbers to suit your needs, let me know.
