This is a bundle of two of my products that can be used in conjunction with each other.
These Dewey Decimal posters and shelf signs are designed to help your students find their own way to their favorite books! They will become much more independent and your nonfiction section will be easier to navigate, giving you more time for everything else you have to do.
Each poster has the classification number, subject heading, a guiding question to encourage students to think (they are very PYP friendly!) and pictures to show students what topics they can find in each section. There are extra signs for Fairy Tales and Biographies as these are usually popular topics within categories.
The Shelf Signs have matching pictures. I like to make a wall display with the posters (letter size paper) and put the signs on the shelves. Students love referring to the wall display and then finding their way to the matching pictures. Each classification sign is 3 x 10" and is designed to fit on the end of a magazine box to sit on your shelves. They can also be laminated and placed at the start, on the end or on top of bookshelves.
(If you don’t have magazine boxes you can get creative and reuse other objects, such as empty cereal boxes. This could be a good opportunity to involve your students and discuss recycling and reusing products to help our earth!).
You can print them as is or on color paper to make your nonfiction section color coded (100 blue, 200 yellow etc.). This is especially helpful for younger students or EAL students who are learning to read- you can guide them to the blue/red/yellow section.
Both sets include extra signs with British/Australian spellings for librarians and teachers in those countries or working in international schools, as well as signs with different terms for some classifications, as I know this can change depending on where you are in the world.
All pictures are hand drawn by us at Platypus Place!
I am always looking for ways to improve my products. If you have any suggestions please let me know. If you like the product, I would really appreciate it if you could leave a review. Thank you!
