This is a SmartBoard lesson to introduce or review the Dewey Decimal System with students. The lesson consists of 23 slides and includes information on the DDS and who created it and why. There is one slide that gives an overview of the system. Then there is one slide for each of the 10 categories plus biographies and folk tales (398). There is a description of the types of books found in that category and photographs that go along with the topics. All of the images are real photographs. There are also 3 interactive slides: a 6 question review quiz, sorting nonfiction book titles into categories and sorting nonfiction book covers into categories. This last activity is an image game. Images of book covers will flash on the screen and when students tap the SmartBoard a book cover will be shown. Students must decide what category the book would go in. This is a favorite of my students, they love playing this game.
All of the text is editable, however none of the images are (due to copyright restrictions).
Included in this download
is a set of Dewey Decimal posters. The posters give the same description of each of the categories. All of the images are real photographs as well. I have included a few blank posters for you to add your own text, however they do not include the same photographs as on the posters. There are a few generic library/book images.
The preview file shows all of the slides for the SmartBoard lesson (minus the 3 interactive slides). If you would like to see a preview of the posters please click here: Dewey Decimal Posters - Real Photographs
The file is in a zip format, you must have an unzip program to open it. If you need help with this please let me know.
