Dia de los Muertos
Day of the Dead is a time to remember our loved ones who have died.
It is believed that the spirits of the dead come to visit their families from Oct. 31st- Nov. 2
In Mexico they celebrate these days by going to church and saying prayers in honor of the souls who have departed. The families will visit the cemeteries and create altars in their homes. They place ofrendas or offerings there for their loved ones. Some examples of offerings might be their favorite foods, fruit, sugar skulls, pan de muertos (bread of the dead), papel picado, candles, incense, yellow marigolds, photos of their loved one, statues of Mary, and a cruxifix.
This is a day filled with happiness and joy because they feel close to their loved ones. The Mexican people are not afraid of death, in fact, they like to make fun of it!
: This year you are to write a report reflecting on the life of a loved one that has passed away. You may choose to write about your grandma, grandpa, a family member, friend, family pet etc. If you are fortunate enough to have all of your closest loved ones still in your life, then you may choose to honor the memory of someone who has touched your life. Perhaps the life of a saint that has influenced your life. Or you could for example choose to dedicate your project to the souls who lost their lives lost in the World Trade Towers attack, or the students at Columbine or the soldiers in the war.
