DIAGNOSTIC READING ASSESSMENT

Updated in 2015. Graphics updated in this refreshed version.

Comes in BOTH a colored/coloured version and black and white.

2016 DECEMBER - Added an extra version using US Spelling.

Mason’s Diagnostic Reading Assessment was originally developed and refined back in 1990. At the time, there was only one other product commonly used and available in schools. One of the issues with it, was that it was a single test. Our school and many other schools were relying on it. A single assessment was too limiting. As a result we developed a new assessment tool so that our diagnosis of students was not based on one assessment alone.

How and when to use it.

This assessment tool is designed for use by mainstream students from years 1 to 6 (Grade 1 to 6).

You should use it in conjunction with other similar forms of assessment to provide further evidence and validation for your findings. Allow students sufficient time to complete as much of the assessment as they are capable of completing. Time constraints do not allow students to demonstrate their full ability.

The assessment tool is best used in the second or third week of the school year and then again at the same time the following year. Some people might prefer to use it again a few weeks before the end of the school year so that some comparisons can be made between the first and second assessments in the one year.

Purpose of the Assessment.

The assessment is designed to provide a guide to each student’s reading age. This is by no means definitive, as there are many factors that might influence a student’s results at any point in

time. It is best if the tool is used as a guide to student improvement between two points in time.
Your results will be more meaningful if you also work out the class averages. IE. Average student age, average scores, average reading age.
