Dialectical journals are a great way to increase reading comprehension for middle-grade and high school students. This strategy teaches students how to follow their own thoughts while they are reading. These higher-level thinking skills help to improve reading comprehension, questioning, analysis, and ultimately help to foster a love of literature, as their skills increase. This strategy works well with proficient readers and challenged readers alike.
This resource is the ultimate in differentiated instruction for students, as each student's responses are their own. Because of the individual nature of the strategy, accommodating for students with special needs is nearly automatic. Suggestions for accommodations are included in this resource.
This resource includes background information on the strategy, a lesson plan for introducing it to students, and the student handout.
