You Betcha is a formative assessment and a game to familiarize students with dialogue rules. Every year when I play this with my students, I am assured that every student will be engaged. Each student starts with $100 imaginary dollars. Throughout the game, they cheer when they earn money and work hard to understand their mistakes if they lose money. As we get to the end, the excitement increases to see who will win.
I always have students practice the dialogue rules before any type of narrative writing. This front loading helps students use dialogue more effectively to improve their narratives, and it lessons the amount of editing needed later. This file includes teacher directions, reproducible dialogue rules handout, reproducible game sheet, and answer key. Will the kids learn and have fun doing it? You betcha!
