This "I Am" Poem project can be used at any time during the novel or play, however, I find it best as a cumulative project after the students get to know all of the characters.
This project consists of the instruction page, the poem rough draft/outline page, and the final draft letter "I" page so them to write inside.
The rough draft/outline page gives them enough structure to write a poem that uses CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT and analyzes a characters thoughts/feelings/etc. as well as gives the student creative freedom to use INFERENCES to determine some aspects that were not clearly stated in the novel. PERFECT TIME to look at DIRECT and INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION!!
I give my students construction paper so they cut out and glue their final draft "I" with the poem written inside on a colored piece of paper, however, they can also decorate the outside of the white page if they'd like, instead.
