This lesson unit contains instructions and grading criteria for the Holocaust Journal activity. This is a creative writing assignment where students write as if they lived back in the 40s and were in hiding from the Nazis. They can include pictures to make their journals more personal. In my experience, for younger students, the play version of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK is more engaging than reading the diary. I see the benefits of both, so like to supplement the play by reading selected diary passages out loud, specifically:
-Saturday, June 20, 1942. Anti-Jewish Laws
-Sunday, July 5, 1942. Going into hiding
-Tuesday, March 7, 1944. Years in hiding retrospect.
-Friday, April 28, 1944. “Two Annes.”
-Tuesday, August 1, 1944. Last entry
A unit test and answer key specific to the play is also included.
