This download is a free, 3 week teaching sequence for Sally Harris' humorous new book, DIARY OF A PENGUIN-NAPPER. It includes a range of reading and writing based literacy activities for students aged 8-11 and includes diary writing, vocabulary level work, story mapping, hot seating, writing in a role and writing a newspaper report. There are possible ICT and Art curriculum links.
The reader is kept in suspense throughout this humorous adventure which centres on 11 (and a half) year old Marty Finn and one tiny, stolen penguin. When Marty’s mother finds a penguin hiding out in the spare bathroom of their home, all of Marty’s best laid plans come crashing down. His mother calls the police (affectionately nicknamed Fat and Skinny) and when they arrive at the house, Marty is called upon to explain exactly how this unlikely situation came to be. In order to fully explain his predicament, Marty needs to recount the events of the previous three weeks, from where it all began in Biology class, through a variety of hair-brained money making ideas, right up to the present.
Inspired by the urban myth that it is possible to steal a penguin using just a backpack, Diary of a Penguin-Napper is aimed at an 8-11 year old audience, with short chapters, a diary style format and plenty of humour making it appealing to even the most reluctant of readers.
